2024 Comic Submissions
Submissions close on December 20th at 5pm GMT.
We are looking to publish short comics from Europe-based creatives, which will be crowdfunded in the second half of 2025.
This submission window is slightly different to previous calls for comics. Rather than brand new comics, we are calling for completed comics between 24 and 100 pages in length. The comic can have been available to read digitally, and if they have previously been self-published you must have printed under 100 copies. We are open to most genres, excluding children’s comics and erotica. This is not a submission window for a new original comic collection like our 2021 and 2023 collections.
Accepted comics may go through a minor revisions process to prepare them for print and you will have the option to have the comic completely relettered for you. Quindrie Press will handle pre-press for you, will promote you and your comic, will publish your comic, and will provide you with your own copies to sell online or at conventions.
Submissions close on December 20th 2024 at 5pm GMT. We are not open for submissions for any other comics or projects and we will ignore and delete any emails regarding other kinds of submissions.
What is Quindrie Press?
Quindrie Press is an independent comics publisher based in Edinburgh, Scotland, founded and solely run by comic creator Eve Greenwood in 2020. Our focus is to provide creators with the opportunity to publish passion project comics that haven’t found their home anywhere else. We have a particular interest in helping marginalised and upcoming creators to publish their work. Our comics have received nominations from the Eisner, Ignatz, SICBA, and Selkie Awards, plus more. Quindrie Press is also one half of the team behind TAGS Festival.
Quindrie Press is a trans-led small business and our values are those of inclusivity and respect. Each month we donate a portion of our PDF sales to a different charity or organisation dedicated to supporting marginalised communities in Scotland. Read more about our selected organisations here. All our crowdfunding campaigns include options to donate books to people in prison or people in need. Quindrie Press believes in a free Palestine, that trans women are women, and that Black Lives Matter.
Please also be aware that Quindrie Press is a very small indie publisher and we do not have wide distribution, but we are heavily involved in the local Scottish and wider UK comics scenes. Our priorities are introducing your work to our ravenous (that’s a compliment) indie comic readership, promoting voices that aren’t finding purchase in the mainstream, and working closely with creators to create a beautiful, high-quality book that they can be proud of.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for completed, stand-alone comics between 24-100 pages in length (please note this does not include covers or additional non-comic pages). The comics can have been:
Digitally available to read or buy, either as a PDF or webcomic.
Self-published in English if you have printed under 100 copies total and it has not been crowdfunded. If an English language version of the comic has been crowdfunded (eg. on Kickstarter) or previously published with another publisher (including anthologies), we cannot accept it.
Published in any language other than English at any quantity, even if it has been crowdfunded or published with another publisher. Please note that we will not be translating any comics ourselves; if you are submitting a comic that has previously only been published in another language, you must provide us with an English version. If you are not confident in your English version, we can assist in editing the text if we accept it.
We are interested in:
Diverse and nuanced characters
A wide range of genres and styles
Stories with tight themes
The comic can be:
Any art style!
Any dimensions!
Most genres, including autobio! (see below for exclusions)
At this time, we do not want:
Pitches for uncompleted work
Children’s comics
Explicit erotica (sexual imagery is fine)
Stories based on previously existing work (eg. fanfiction, satires)
Stories that tie-in to other work (eg. spin-offs or side stories)
Prose, illustrated stories or poetry, or other non-comic pitches
Pitches for on-going series
Work that has been previously printed by a publisher in English
Work that has been previously self-published in English through crowdfunding (eg. on Kickstarter)
Work that has been previously published in in English as part of an anthology
Work involving AI at any stage of production, including writing
While we are open to pitches with challenging themes or strong political themes, we will never be interested in publishing work that promotes hateful ideologies such as racism, homophobia, or transphobia.
Who can apply?
We are looking for Europe-based creators (creators who live full-time in Europe). We are particularly interested in publishing work from women, creators of colour, queer creators, and disabled creators. We are looking for a mix of creators who have had previous publishing experience and who have not yet had their work published. You do not have to originally be from Europe to apply. As Quindrie Press is based in Scotland and has an interest in supporting and promoting the Scottish comics scene, we will also be prioritising applicants based in Scotland.
You must:
Be 18 or older.
Be based in Europe fulltime and have a European address (if you currently live in Europe but will leave within the next two years then you unfortunately do not qualify).
Be able to provide a PDF of the full, completed comic as intended to be read. We cannot accept submissions of partially completed work.
Project timeline
Submissions will be open from November 1st until December 20th 2024 at 5pm GMT. We will notify all applicants of their outcome by February 28th 2025.
Because we’re casting our net quite wide for this submission window, we can’t currently give firm times for when crowdfunders will go ahead. It may be that we select a couple of longer comics for individual crowdfunders, or several shorter comics which might be grouped into one crowdfunder. The aim is that all accepted comics will be crowdfunded in the second half of 2025.
Payment & rights
Payment: Creators will be given a base payment of £20 per comic page for the rights to print their work, alongside a number of comp copies that they may keep or sell. Creators will receive 20% of their payment on signing and the remainder of the payment will be made after the crowdfunder is successful. Each creator may receive additional payment depending on how much the crowdfunder raises (however, for the same reason that we can’t give firm crowdfunder timelines, we cannot currently give a firm rate for this). Creators will receive royalties of 25% of all post-crowdfunder sales of their work (see below for how this is handled with PDF sales) and these royalties will be paid out twice a year. Creators will also be able to buy more copies of their book at 50% off and may sell these copies.
All payment will be made in £GBP via bank transfer or Paypal transfer. We cannot pay in euros or any other currency. If you are a creative team, payment will be made to one member of the team and can be split at your own discretion.
Printing rights: Quindrie Press will have sole English-language printing rights for as long as the book is in print and Quindrie Press has an inventory of at least 20 copies to sell. This means that you will not be able to print the comic on your own during that time.
Digital rights: You may either choose for Quindrie Press to be the sole seller of the PDF, for which you will receive royalties, or retain the right to sell the PDF yourself and receive full profit from your own sales, but not receive royalties from Quindrie Press’ PDF sales.
Other rights: Creators will always own the characters, artwork, and all adaptation rights (film, tv, translation rights etc).
FAQ
Why completed comics only?
This page says “we” all over it, but Quindrie Press really is entirely run by just one person! Quindrie Press has more original comics in the pipeline but they’re still a while away from being finished and I only have so much time and energy I can dedicate to new Quindrie projects. I’ve decided to take on smaller-scale projects with faster turnarounds for the time being.
Why Europe-based creators only?
As there are fewer indie presses in the UK, we are focusing on providing opportunities to creators closer to home.
I am not originally from Europe but I live here. Can I apply?
Absolutely! As long as you live in a European country long-term (ie. you aren’t moving away within the next two years) you can apply.
I’m from a European country but I don’t live there. Can I apply?
No, this project is specifically for Europe-based creators.
I currently live in Europe but will move away within the next two years. Can I apply?
No, this project is specifically for Europe-based creators who will remain in Europe for at least the next two years.
Can I submit a comic that I have already published online for free, such as a webcomic?
Yes, but the entire comic must be between 24 and 100 pages and we are not accepting submissions for comics that are part of a longer narrative.
Can I submit a comic that I haven’t finished drawing yet?
No, at this time we are only asking for completed comics.
How many comics can I submit?
We strongly recommend only pitching your strongest comic proposal, with an absolute maximum of three pitches per creative team. Please submit all pitches separately.
What counts as “minor revisions”?
This may be tweaking colours for print, adjusting or adding artwork for bleed, or slight edits to text/dialogue for clarity or to fix grammatical errors. You will not be asked to redraw individual panels or pages, nor will the story be changed from what is submitted. The only potential major revision would be relettering, which Quindrie Press will handle for you.
Where does profit from Quindrie Press’ sales go?
Our goal is to support the UK comic scene, so a large portion of our profit goes to future projects like this one. Every month a portion of our PDF sales is also donated to a different charity or organisation dedicated to supporting marginalised communities in Scotland. Read more about our selected organisations here.
What happens if I am rejected?
If your pitch is rejected, you are more than welcome to pitch another project to Quindrie Press in the future, but please do not pitch the same comic more than once.
How do I apply?
Please prepare the following:
An overview of the story and its themes (maximum five sentences).
A PDF of the completed comic.
You may wish to read over the release agreement which you will need to agree to on the submission form.
Please be aware that if accepted, you will need to provide your legal name for your contract. As per UK data protection guidelines, this information will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used for any other purpose. You do not need to provide your legal name on the submissions form.
Submissions close on December 20th at 5pm GMT; this is a hard deadline and we will not consider any submissions past this time. Please make sure your PDFs remain available for us to download until January 31st 2025, as we will not follow up on any broken links and will automatically reject your pitch. We recommend adding quindriepress@gmail.com to your email contacts so any emails from us don’t end up in your spam folder. You will hear back by the end of February 2025.
Fill out this form to submit your comic.
